On This Day: January 14

This is the 14th day of the year.

Fact of the Day: penguin

The name pen gwyn or 'white head' originally referred to the great auk in winter plumage and was misapplied to the animal we call penguin. The majority of the 18 species breed on islands in subantarctic waters. The total populations of some species, such as the emperor penguin, are estimated in hundreds of thousands, but those of most species of smaller penguins run to several million. The economic importance of penguins is negligible. Most colonies are left alone or actively protected. Some species are now increasing in numbers, apparently as a result of the drastic reduction of Antarctic whales, which compete with penguins for the krill (minute crustaceans) on which both feed.
